Big Chats is a program of facilitated conversations between established and early career artists in casual settings.

Grab a drink and a bite to eat from the Taphouse Kitchen, then settle in to hear from artists Kim Guthrie and Warwick Gow as they discuss their practices with writer and curator, Kevin Wilson.

Happy hour from 4-6pm.

Kim Guthrie is an artist who has lived and worked on the Sunshine Coast for the past 30 years. His practice explores Australian-ness and his aesthetic is a reaction to the highly edited and oversaturated images of popular media. Originally from Melbourne, Guthrie studied Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts and his work has been included in numerous exhibitions including Rivers Edge: Kim Guthrie at USC Art Gallery, GOMA Q: Contemporary Queensland Art at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, and Exchange Value at QUT Art Museum. He is a regular contributor to Artist Profile and VAULT.

Warwick Gow is a Sunshine Coast based photographer who uses the portrait to place local fringe culture within arm’s length of the mainstream. Exploring notions of identity and self by hijacking the thin veil of commercialism and elegantly smashing it against DIY ethics, Warwick’s crusty and colourful work uses portraits, zines and installation art to destabilize notions of representation.

Kevin Wilson is a writer and curator currently based on the Sunshine Coast. Kevin had an early career as a photographic artist with exhibitions in major galleries including the National Gallery of Victoria. The major part of his career has been as a gallery director and curator. He has directed public galleries in Melbourne, Albury, Noosa, and Brisbane. In the last 8 years he has been principally a curator developing a range of innovative social history, fine arts and craft and design exhibitions at the State Library of Queensland, QUT Art Museum and artisan. Currently he is a PHD candidate in Creative Industries at QUT and is coordinating the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre.
